Nestled in the heart of Ann Arbor at 1511 Washtenaw Avenue, The Common Cup is far more than just your typical coffee shop—it's a vibrant community hub and a welcoming oasis for students, locals, and visitors alike. This nonprofit café has carved out a special place in the city's coffee scene by combining excellent beverages with a relaxed, art-filled atmosphere that invites you to linger, work, or simply savor the moment.
The Common Cup’s menu is as thoughtfully curated as its mission. Coffee lovers will delight in their expertly crafted drinks like the velvety Pumpkin Spice Latte, which perfectly balances warm autumnal spices with smooth espresso, instantly evoking cozy fall vibes. For something refreshingly fruity, the Peach Smoothie is a luscious, vibrant treat, while chocolate aficionados will appreciate the indulgent Blended Caramel Mocha - The Classic, a rich and creamy blend that satisfies any sweet craving. Their innovative Almond Joy Latte and the exotic Moroccan Mint Tea offer unique flavor journeys, while the Vegan Hot Chocolate ensures no one misses out on comfort in a cup.
Tea connoisseurs are invited to explore a refined selection, with standout options like the Nepal Himalaya View green tea—a milder, golden-hued brew from the high elevations of eastern Nepal—and the specialty Moroccan Mint Tea, a refreshing blend of Chinese gunpowder green tea and fresh mint that transports your senses straight to North Africa.
But The Common Cup’s appeal goes beyond its menu. Regular visitors, such as Silvana Graf, praise it as a “super friendly and relaxed place” complimenting the rotating local art exhibits that adorn the walls, adding an inspiring and creative vibe. Friday evenings come alive with special events that foster connection and community spirit. Annie Li describes it as “possibly my favorite cafe in Ann Arbor” and a perfect study spot, lauding its consistent, friendly service and the addition of baked goods from DJ’s Bakery that provide ideal study breaks.
The peaceful ambiance here is often highlighted by patrons seeking a quiet refuge during hectic times. Vianney Flores shares how The Common Cup became their midterm season lifesaver—a serene spot away from packed libraries, filled with comfortable seating, ample outlets, and just the right blend of ambient music. The friendly, inclusive energy that Amy Sisco noticed, noting the kind staff and welcoming patrons, makes it a family-friendly destination as well.
Environmentally conscious visitors will appreciate The Common Cup’s thoughtful policies like the small charge for takeout cups, encouraging customers to bring reusable ones—a detail Clair Li commends as a meaningful step toward sustainability without sacrificing charm or convenience.
Whether you’re craving a handcrafted latte that feels like a warm hug or hunting for that perfect nook to power through your work or studies, The Common Cup offers a rich, genuine experience infused with community spirit and outstanding coffee culture. It’s a place where every sip connects you to Ann Arbor’s heart and soul.
For a sincere, expertly brewed cup and an inviting space that feels like a second home, The Common Cup is undeniably a must-visit for both locals and travelers exploring Ann Arbor.
Super friendly and relaxed place with a nice art exhibit on the walls. Great coffee! They have special events on Fridays. I will go back. It’s non-profit!
I love the common cup! Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, plus great drinks and pastries! It’s a wonderful place to spend an afternoon working or reading. The space can be a bit noisy sometimes but it doesn’t bother me at all. A side note: they do charge an extra 25¢ for takeout cups so BYO coffee cups if you are on-the-go (I actually appreciate this policy cuz it encourages environmental consciousness!)
Great coffee & nice atmosphere. Kind staff & patrons! Loved our visits here! Our kids enjoyed it, too.
Possibly my favorite cafe in Ann Arbor, and definitely my favorite place to study on campus. Consistently friendly service, excellent coffee/espresso drinks, and now they even have baked goods from DJ’s Bakery for a quick study snack. Soooo good.
This was an AMAZING find during midterm season. ALL cafes and libraries are PACKED and I was so pleased this place was far enough to take a 10min walk, but close enough to be convenient. It's so empty and quiet with plenty of outlets. I personally enjoyed their elevator music, and their selection of drinks and muffins. My new go-to when I need a quiet place to study! 10/10 recommend, but hope this place stays a hidden gem :)
Good catch-up vibe with many students studying and chatting there. Not good for quiet studying. Sometimes no seats because of too many students. Coffee could take 15-20 minutes to make. Good coffee but could take forever! Not vegan cookies!
This place is absolutely lovely. It really gives off the "coffee shop to work in" vibe that I have been looking for for so long. I do work here nearly every day and I love coming here. There are times where it can get loud due to a large amount of customers, but if I put in headphones it is still easy to focus. I am not an avid coffee drinker, so my judgement of coffee might be that of a novice, but this shop has a large variety of coffee and all of them are pretty unique. They care about their customers and do their best to give everyone a great experience. Also, they never skimp on the coffee. Now not every cup is like the picture below, but 9/10 time my cup is filled to the brim and it always looks great. Best coffee shop ever. (Pictures are the Cafe Miel)
The Common Cup is one of my favorite cafes in Ann Arbor! It is spacious, the latte sizes are generous, and it has free parking in central Ann Arbor - a huge perk. The staff are friendly. It is a gem hidden in the rough. Definitely search it out!
